For the Diversity Visa entry form, the State Department specifies a square JPEG photograph of 600 × 600 pixels and up to 240 KB. Use a recent photo, a plain white/off-white background, neutral expression and no appearance-altering edits.

DV Lottery photo size, format and file limit

The official Diversity Visa entry photo requirements are specific. A photograph may look fine on a phone screen yet still fail technical requirements. Check the exact pixel dimensions and the actual file size before uploading.

RequirementDV entry specification
Pixel dimensions600 × 600 pixels
Aspect ratio1:1 (square)
FormatJPEG / .jpg
Maximum file size240 KB
ColorFull color
Photo ageGenerally taken within the last six months
BackgroundPlain white or off-white
GlassesNot permitted in new U.S. visa photos, subject to limited medical exceptions

Be careful with online advice that says 1200×1200 is always fine. The general digital image page lists a broader range for some visa contexts, but the specific Diversity Visa entry section calls for 600×600 pixels.

How to take a correct DV Lottery photo

1

Stand against a white or off-white background

Use even lighting. Avoid visible shadows behind your head or across your face.

2

Face the camera directly

Keep your head upright, with both eyes open and a neutral expression. Do not take a sideways, angled or selfie-style portrait that distorts your face.

3

Use recent, accurate appearance

Take a current photograph. Do not modify your face, skin texture, eye shape or features using AI, beautification filters or heavy retouching.

4

Crop to square without cutting off your head

Make sure the full head is visible and positioned according to the official composition guide. Avoid excessive empty space or cropping the hair or chin.

5

Export a 600×600 JPEG under 240 KB

Check file properties after exporting. Be sure it is really .jpg rather than a .png or an image renamed to .jpg.

Common reasons a DV photo may be unacceptable

  • A patterned, gray, blue or heavily shadowed background.
  • Eyeglasses, glare or objects obscuring the eyes.
  • Filters that alter facial appearance or an AI-generated substitute for the applicant's photograph.
  • A photo from several years ago or reused in a way that violates the currency requirement.
  • Incorrect head position or cropped forehead/chin.
  • File dimensions other than 600×600 for the DV entry.
  • Incorrect file format or file size above the limit.
Important: A photo cropper can confirm dimensions but cannot guarantee that the government will accept a photo. Check the Department of State's full guidance and examples.

How to resize a DV photo to 600×600 without damaging it

Start with a high-resolution original that already has the correct background and pose. Crop it to a square while retaining the required head framing. Then resize the square to 600×600, export as JPEG, and choose a compression setting that keeps the file at or below 240 KB without obvious blocks or blur. Reopen the saved file and check its properties.

You can also consult the State Department's official photo instructions and cropping tool. Cropping is not a substitute for checking lighting, expression, and other content rules.

Do spouses and children need separate photos?

If the current DV-2027 entry instructions require your spouse and eligible children to be listed, prepare a compliant, individual photo for each person for whom a photo is required. Do not use a group photo, and make sure each photograph reflects the correct individual.

DV photo questions answered

Is a 600 × 600 JPG required for DV Lottery 2027?

The State Department's current Diversity Visa entry-photo instructions specify 600×600 pixels in JPEG format. Confirm the final entry instructions when registration opens.

Can I use a 1200×1200 photo?

For the specific online DV entry requirements, prepare 600×600 pixels. Broader digital-image guidance for other visa contexts does not override the DV entry instructions.

Is a white shirt on a white background forbidden?

The governing question is whether your photo meets the official composition and visibility requirements. Clothing is not automatically disqualifying just because it is light-colored; check contrast and the official examples.

Can I use AI to change the background or face?

Do not digitally alter your appearance. Take the original photo against a compliant background instead of relying on AI replacements.
